Material choice isn’t just aesthetics. It changes weight (and therefore operator size), how the gate handles Georgia heat and storms, how much maintenance you’ll do, and how the finished entrance feels every time you pull in.
Steel
Steel is the workhorse for strength and custom fabrication. It takes ornamental detail well, welds cleanly for repairs, and stands up to daily use on residential and commercial sites.
- Pros: durable, repairable, excellent for custom designs and heavy-duty openings
- Watch-outs: heavier (operator must match), needs proper finish/coatings against rust, especially near road salt and low wet spots
- Best for: estate swing gates, commercial slides, designs that may need future welding repairs
Aluminum
Aluminum keeps weight down, which can ease operator requirements and reduce long-term strain on hinges and rollers. It resists rust, which is attractive in humid climates.
- Pros: lighter, corrosion-resistant, smoother automation on many residential installs
- Watch-outs: not as forgiving as steel for heavy impact or certain structural spans; design must respect aluminum’s strength profile
- Best for: residential gates where weight savings and low rust risk matter
Ornamental and mixed styles
“Ornamental” usually means decorative pickets, scrolls, rings, or custom patterns — typically in steel (sometimes aluminum). Mixed designs add wood accents, privacy screening, or solid panels for screening headlights and street views.
- Open ornamental — classic look, lower wind load than solid panels
- Privacy / screened — better seclusion, higher wind load, often needs a stronger operator
- Wood accents — warm curb appeal; plan for wood weathering and eventual refinishing separate from the metal structure
Design note: Solid or semi-solid panels look fantastic but behave like sails in storms. We size operators and hardware for the real wind load, not just the gate’s static weight.
Finish and longevity
- Powder coating — durable color finish common on quality fabricated gates; still needs clean drainage and occasional wash-downs.
- Structural guarantees vs. finish — our fabrication guarantees cover structural integrity; coatings wear with sun, abrasion, and impact (we’ll explain that clearly on install).
- Maintenance reality — even “low maintenance” gates need photo-eye cleaning, path clearing, and periodic professional checks.
Match material to how you live
- High-cycle community or commercial entry → prioritize duty-rated hardware and repairable steel fabrication
- Quiet residential driveway with a designed look → ornamental steel or aluminum with the right operator
- Privacy from a busy road → screened or mixed materials, with honest talk about wind and operator size
